Driver turnover rate

Driver turnover rate is the percentage of a fleet's driver positions that turn over in a year — a fleet of 100 trucks with 80 driver departures replaced has 80% turnover. Turnover in truckload segments is famously high, which makes recruiting a permanent operation rather than an occasional project.

Why it matters when hiring drivers

Turnover sets the floor for recruiting volume: a fleet doesn't recruit to grow, it recruits to stand still, and growth comes on top. It also compounds every other metric — high turnover with a slow, expensive funnel is how fleets end up with parked trucks and standing job ads that never close.
