MVR (Motor Vehicle Record)

An MVR — Motor Vehicle Record — is the driving history a state holds on a licensed driver: moving violations, license suspensions, revocations and reported accidents. Carriers pull MVRs before hiring, and FMCSA regulations require a review of each driver's record at hire and periodically afterwards.

Why it matters when hiring drivers

The MVR is where an application's claims meet the record. A driver can describe a clean history in an interview; the MVR shows the speeding conviction and the suspension. Insurers also price a fleet partly on its drivers' records, so an unchecked MVR is a cost even when nothing goes wrong.
