Live load / live unload

A live load or live unload is freight handling where the driver waits at the dock while the trailer is loaded or emptied — as opposed to drop and hook. Waiting time, called detention when it runs past the allowed window, may or may not be paid.

Why it matters when hiring drivers

Detention policy is one of the questions experienced drivers ask before accepting an offer, because unpaid dock hours are the classic hidden pay cut. Being upfront about live-load share and detention pay in recruiting filters for drivers who will actually stay.
