Dry van

A dry van is the standard enclosed box trailer, and dry-van freight — packaged goods, retail, non-perishables — is the largest general segment of truckload trucking. It requires no securement or temperature work, making it the most common entry point for company drivers.

Why it matters when hiring drivers

Because dry van is the default, it is also the most competitive segment for hiring: the same driver qualifies at hundreds of fleets. Recruiting differentiation comes from the terms — lanes, home time, equipment, pay structure — and from responding to applicants faster than the fleet next door.
