CDL-A

A CDL-A is a Class A commercial driver's license — the license required to operate combination vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, where the towed unit exceeds 10,000 pounds. In practice, it is the license for tractor-trailers, and the baseline requirement for nearly all over-the-road, regional and dedicated trucking jobs.

Why it matters when hiring drivers

For a hiring fleet, CDL-A is the first and hardest filter. A large share of applicants from broad advertising channels do not hold one, and every such applicant that reaches a recruiter's call list costs time without any possibility of a hire. Verifying class — not just possession of "a CDL" — matters, because a CDL-B holder cannot legally drive a combination vehicle.
