CDL-B

A CDL-B is a Class B commercial driver's license, which covers single vehicles rated 26,001 pounds or more that tow nothing heavier than 10,000 pounds — straight trucks, box trucks, dump trucks and most buses. A CDL-B does not qualify a driver for tractor-trailer work.

Why it matters when hiring drivers

CDL-B applicants are one of the most common false positives in trucking recruitment: the driver genuinely holds a commercial license and genuinely believes they qualify, but cannot take a Class A position. If a fleet's screening asks only "do you have a CDL," this distinction surfaces late — usually on a recruiter's phone call, sometimes at orientation.
