Step deck

A step deck (or drop deck) is an open trailer with a lower main deck behind a raised front section, built to carry freight too tall for a standard flatbed while staying within height limits. The work is flatbed work: securement, tarping, and oversized-load awareness.

Why it matters when hiring drivers

Step deck experience signals a driver comfortable with taller, heavier and occasionally permitted loads. For fleets in machinery or equipment hauling, it is a distinct qualification worth screening for by name rather than folding into "flatbed experience."
