Non-domiciled CDL

A non-domiciled CDL is a commercial driver's license issued by a US state to a driver who is not domiciled in that state — typically a driver who is not a permanent resident of the United States but is authorized to work there. It is a legal license class whose exact rules are set by FMCSA regulation and state practice.

Why it matters when hiring drivers

Fleets meet non-domiciled CDLs more often than they expect, and policies differ: some carriers hire these drivers routinely, others exclude them for insurance or customer-contract reasons. What hurts is discovering the license status late. It belongs in the screening criteria a fleet defines explicitly, whichever way the fleet decides.
