Owner-operator vs. company driver

An owner-operator owns or leases their truck and contracts it — with themselves driving — to carriers or shippers, typically as a 1099 contractor paid a revenue share or per-mile contractor rate. A company driver drives the carrier's truck as a W-2 or 1099 driver without owning equipment.

Why it matters when hiring drivers

The two audiences barely overlap: owner-operators evaluate a fleet as a business partner (rates, fuel programs, deadhead), while company drivers evaluate it as an employer (pay, home time, equipment). Recruiting creative and screening questions that don't pick one audience end up convincing neither.
