What does AI actually do in the funnel?
Four concrete jobs. It conducts the first interview — by phone, then video — speaking like a person, asking the qualifying questions a recruiter would ask, at any hour and in any language. It checks the answers against the fleet's criteria: license class, endorsements, experience, fleet history, route and employment terms.
It then triggers the verification layer — CDL verification, MVR, carrier history, FMCSA safety records, drug test results, delivered as one report — and finally it runs onboarding paperwork digitally, from 1099 and W-2 contracts to signatures and storage.
What doesn't it do?
It doesn't make the hire. Choosing which qualified driver fits this fleet, this lane, this dispatcher — that judgment stays with recruiters, and should. It also doesn't conjure demand: AI can qualify the drivers your offer attracts, but it cannot make an uncompetitive pay package competitive or a misdescribed job accurate.
And it doesn't replace the relationship. Drivers still join fleets because a human made the job feel real. AI's contribution is that the human conversation happens with someone worth having it with.
Isn't an AI interview just a chatbot with a phone number?
No — the difference is conversation. A form with a voice, an IVR tree, a rigid script: drivers hang up on those, the way everyone does. An AI interviewer speaks naturally, follows the driver's answers, and asks the follow-up a recruiter would ask. The output isn't a transcript of menu choices; it's a structured qualification a recruiter can act on.
Where does the recruiter fit after AI?
At the decisions. When screening is automated, a recruiter's day inverts: instead of a hundred dials to reach a handful of maybes, it starts with a shortlist of drivers whose license, record and expectations are already verified. The hours move from triage to closing — the part of the job recruiters are actually good at, and the part drivers actually respond to.
How should a fleet evaluate an AI recruiting tool?
Ask three questions. What does it verify, versus merely collect? When does it engage the applicant — in minutes or in days? And what lands on your team's desk — raw leads, or candidates who have been interviewed and checked? The answers separate tools that automate contact from systems that automate qualification.
